It was only earlier this year–in 2011–at a workshop in Texas, the second most populous state in the United States, that I was asked the question “what is the Asian language?” I knew then that I have more work to do. First of all, globally, one refers to the continent Asia when talking about Asia. This includes Russian in the north to India and Bangladesh in the south, and Korea and Japan to the east and Turkey, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia to the west. However, here in the United States, one rarely includes Russia or Saudi Arabia when talking about Asia. Secondly, we have more than 50 countries in Asia; hence there is no one Asian language much less than one Asian culture. Finally, when we speak of Asian Americans in the United States, we have to remind ourselves that they are an heterogeneous group with multiple languages and different cultures of customs and traditions.
