“Lee”(?) is a common family name used in China, Korea, Vietnam, and the Philippines.
“Lee is one of the three most common surnames of Chinese(the other two are Wang or Wong and Zhang or Chang, depends on the dialect). Approximately eight percent of the Chinese in China have this last name. “Lee” is used by Cantonese speakers whereas “Li”–a variation of “Lee”–is used by Mandarin speakers.
“Lee” is also the second most common surname for Koreans, after “Kim.”
As for the Vietnamese, “Lee” is spelled as “Lý”
Finally, there are Fiipinos whose last name is either “Li” or “Lee.” They are Filipinos of Chinese ancestry.
As you see, one simply cannot assume one’s nationality by his/her last name!

When first meeting someone, I use (first and) last names to help me understand where a person may come from (geographically, ethnically), but I don’t let it limit my assumptions. I also listen for their accent and then their life information. These pieces of information help guide my listening and my conversation as I get to know a person.
